This exhibition features an intricately designed late 19th-century Model of the Old City of Jerusalem. Based on new research, the model is attributed for the first time to Moses Kerngood, a non-professional model maker who created this elaborate, multi-media model in his spare time while working in the textile business in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1880s or 1890s. The Model of the Old City recently underwent an extensive conservation treatment through which it can properly be appreciated for the first time since its creation. Complemented by two other historic models from the Museum’s collection, this installation presents different methods of modeling holy sites, and invites us to reflect on how important places from Jewish history have been re-imagined and rebuilt – sometimes in very unexpected ways.
