Peter Baldwin, Board Chair

Peter Baldwin is Research Professor at UCLA and Global Distinguished Professor at NYU.  He has written widely on the comparative historical development of the modern state, across Europe and the US, on topics such as the class coalitions that cemented the modern welfare state, the 19C public health strategies that provided the template by which the AIDS and Covid epidemics were fought a century later, the long-standing battles over intellectual property that inform our current disputes over copyright, downloading, internet piracy, and open access, and the ever-growing role of law as the socializer of last resort in modern society.

He serves on the boards of the New York Public Library, the Wikimedia Endowment, the Central European University, and the Danish Institute of Advanced Studies.

His journalistic writings have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, Newsweek, New Republic, Huffington Post, Der Spiegel, Berliner Zeitung, Publishers Weekly, Chronicle of Higher Education, Prospect, Times Higher Education, American Interest, and Zocalo Public Square.

Peter Baldwin and Lisbet Rausing founded Arcadia in 2002. Arcadia has awarded $1.3 billion to organizations around the world, and grant recipients have created and shared hundreds of thousands of digital records of archives, languages, archaeological sites and craft practices, ensured lasting support for millions of hectares of fragile ecosystems, and overcome laws and commercial practices restricting access to publicly-funded research and government documents.
